NIME Music Track Concert 2 Transcript of captions and on screen text: Introduction: Welcome to our second concert for the conference. Tonight’s music is themed around the expansion and subversion of instrumental practices and traditions. In this set: access switches are used to distribute aspects of control in a telematic piano performance; Guzheng and violin traditions meet and are mediated with technology; unstable nuances are explored on the Halldorophone, toeing the boundaries of what can be controlled; the role and nature of instruments are changed on the fly, in a trio performance featuring augmented violin, acoustic and electronic tabla, and live coding; complex responses are negotiated and explored with the Augmented Double Bass; and finally, a violinists’ gestures create a dialogue with archive footage of Ukrainian fiddle playing, playing on the imperfect nature of memory. Now over to the musicians, enjoy! Split Point: The Piano Reimagined as an Inclusive Hyper-Instrument Alex Lucas, Tim Leatham, Eoin Fitzpatrick, Mary-Louise McCord & Daniel Morgan Queen’s University Belfast Drake Music Project Northern Ireland Charon For Guzheng, violin, samples, and live electronics Charon is a celestial body in the solar system. In a tide-locked state, it and Pluto gradually becoming synchronous rotation from different orbits and rotation rates due to the influence of tidal forces over a period of time. This work combines different sounds of Chinese instrument, Western instrument, and Samples. Their process from struggle to integration is a metaphor that Charon is gradually affected by tidal forces. Technology in this work has created interaction among the acoustic instruments, samples and sound effects. The connection among them develops the work. I believe that the tension and interaction are the fascination of the combination of sounds. The work uses the following two different interaction systems which are completely controlled by the performers. Guzheng system uses the information collected by Myo Armband to analyse performer hand gestures and trigger the sound effects in real time. Violin system uses the sound of the violin as a controller, which can control the movement of the samples in real time. The performer uses the foot pedal to switch samples during the performance. Since the first generation FAAB is an involuntary lockdown in Belfast Northern Ireland while I live in Berlin, the performance is a first encounter with improvising with a second generation FAAB developed over the last couple of weeks here in Berlin. artefacts of presence by Solomiya Moroz You’re about to hear artefacts of presence for violin, video and live electronics, performed by Dejana Sekulic on the violin. The piece is based on archival footage, video and audio from a Ukrainian folk music archive in Canada and was part of the larger project Docu_presence. In this piece, I used transcriptions of the audio from the video footage and adapted it to violin writing and techniques. In addition, I used an attachment on the bow comprised of a Minibee accelerometer whose speed of movement and direction manipulates the sample that you will hear from minute 5:30 in the piece. Artefacts of Presence Solomiya Moroz - Composition Dejana Sekulic - Violin Many thanks to the artists featured tonight, we’re back with two sets of music tomorrow night, starting from 7pm uk time. See you then
