Good morning NIME!  The OHMI Trust is a charity based in Birmingham, UK, who support the development and use of adapted musical instruments for musicians with disabilities. Part of our work includes the annual OHMI Competition, which challenges instrument designers and makers to develop innovative solutions to adapted instrument design. We also provide support to pupils and music teachers in schools in the acquisition and teaching of adapted instruments, via the OHMI Music Makers scheme. Recently, we launched the OHMI Research Partnership (ORP), a collaboration between OHMI, Queen Mary University of London, and Birmingham City University. The ORP seeks to support and develop research on the subject of music and disability, including instrument design, education, and social policy. We are keen to expand our network of researchers and instrument makers and to set up new collaborations with people interested in this field. In lieu of a physical presence at this year?s NIME, we have been kindly offered a space to meet during the breaks today and tomorrow, for anyone to come along and talk to us to find out more about the OHMI Trust and our future plans for the ORP. Please do come along and say hello!  The link for today?s breakout room is https://us04web.zoom.us/j/77099821129?pwd=YlRjcnl1TFBXVyttSHlSTGczbHUwZz09. We?ll be online between 13:45-14:45 To find out more, visit http://www.ohmi.org.uk and http://www.ohmirp.org.uk for the ORP.

Very cool! How did you get the sensors into the violin?

I used a sharpened pallet knife to get the back off the instrument which is pretty scary and not something you'd maybe want to do to an instrument you like!!! The neck is slightly hollowed out with a Dremel to make space for wiring to the fingerboard sensors.

Just to repost a couple useful links that were pointed out during the chat, for anyone to follow up on: The OHMI Competition - for instrument makers and designers to submit their designs for instruments playable by people with upper-limb impairments. The purpose of the competition is to highlight and document these instruments and hopefully share them with people that might need them: https://www.ohmi.org.uk/the-competition.html Pat Metheney?s Orchestrion - a great musical robotics project that might hopefully inspire some new accessible instrument designs: https://www.patmetheny.com/orchestrioninfo/ Ablegamers - custom games controllers designed for use by disabled people: https://ablegamers.org/ Accessible Instruments Hack - an exciting ongoing hack project composed of remote teams working together on a number of different challenges around accessible instrument design. Applications to join a team are now closed but please get in touch with Rachel or Jacob for more info or if you?d like to get involved https://www.accessibleinstruments.com/
