Hello and welcome! I'm Becky, I work with Drake Music on their Comms & Advocacy. Drake Music is one of the leading UK organisations working where music, disability and technology meet to break down disabling barriers to music. We do that in lots of ways, one of which is DMLab, our R&D programme to develop new accessible musical instruments and technology. Find out more about what we do at http://www.drakemusic.org

_*Our Keynote Presentation is kicking off in less than 10 minutes!*_ *What's it about?* We are presenting our brand new project, AMIC, for it's first time out in public. We're really looking forward to sharing it with NIME attendees and would love to get your input and feedback on it. *Question?* If you have questions or comments during the presentation please share them here and i'll do my best to answer them.

Hello, where is the link for the keynote stream?

niccolo.granieri
2020-07-22 18:01
Hi @kobernik, here is everything you need to know! (Slackbotlinks)

2020-07-22 18:01
Dear attendee, If you want to know how to navigate the conference, please always make sure you start from the Conference Hub - http://nime2020.bcu.ac.uk/conference-hub/ Once you're there, all the links can be found in the "Timetable & Zoom Links" page. Remember to set the "show all links and details" on the top right to "yes" in order to reveal all the links and a detailed view. From the Conference Hub, you can also navigate to the three separate poster and demo pages, useful both to peruse all the materials in your own time, and to access the zoom rooms in the allocated hours throughout the links. The same thing applies to installations: the Installations page will enable you to have a global view of all the installations of NIME2020. Thank you!

beckymorrisknight

Absolutely! There's still a way to go though... we work a lot in schools and while often the will is there, the tech doesn't always follow!

Announcing AMIC! The Accessible Musical Instrument Collection - AMIC will be a sound playground, a place that offers Disabled people the chance to try out accessible instruments, so they can find their way of making the music they want to make. AMIC is created for people at all stages of their musical journeys by the Drake Music team of Disabled and non-Disabled people working together. We are really in the very early stages of this project. It is AMIC's first public outing, we are in the process of developing the project, including the website and info about it. Keep an eye on http://www.drakemusic.org for more info.

Outstanding presentation! Particularly like the focus on physical engagement with the instruments where possible. Are you working on any instruments for people with limited hand/finger dexterity?

beckymorrisknight
2020-07-22 18:26
Yes and no - we don't have any specific instrument projects in development right now (AMIC is overtaking everything!), but we have developed instruments in the past which are responsive to musician's needs in terms of mapping them to their movements - like this AirHarp: https://www.drakemusic.org/blog/becky-morris-knight/guest-post-hannahs-intro-to-the-airharp/ Is that an area you're working in/particularly interested in? Would love to hear more...

_*A little bit about Drake Music:*_ Central to our work is the belief that everyone can fulfil their creative and musical potential, given the right opportunities. We are a Disabled-led organisation and work with Disabled people of all ages, from school children having their first instrumental lessons to professional musicians. We work where music, disability and technology meet to: ?  create opportunities and instruments that make music fully accessible ? https://www.drakemusic.org/technology/instruments-projects/the-kellycaster/ ?  get more people involved in music-making at all levels ? https://www.drakemusic.org/learning/children-young-people/inclusive-ensembles/inclusion-collective-essex/ ?  build an integrated musical culture where Disabled and non-disabled musicians work together as equals ? https://www.drakemusic.org/audio/lime-arts-collage/

John is introducing The Social Model of Disability really quickly, this is a really big and vital part of our work which we don't have time to explain in detail. _*And we are setting out some CHALLENGES!*_ Thinking about our 360 view of Access, we need input from the NIME crowd on how we make accessible instruments and tech Affordable, Available and Adaptable? 1 - In your project are there four buttons too many? 2 - How can we accessibly bridge the gap between a Stradivarius and a tambourine? 3 - Do you have something that should go in the AMIC? We want to know about your projects! We want to put them in the collection, document them and bring ALL this amazing knowledge together in one place. *Fill in our Google Form to get in touch: https://forms.gle/fVFCDfhC48iVDnL96*

Thank you for the wonderful keynote. I very much appreciated John's comments on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in this work. As many of us who have worked in developing accessible instruments are aware, such collaborations can take months, if not years, well beyond the scope of some 'research projects'. I hope that the NIME community can find some imaginative approaches to such challenges and that we can also begin to center on ways in which Disabled musicians can be more deeply involved in NIME as a community/research field itself, and those who are already part of the NIME community can be more supported in leading such work.

Thank you Lauren, that's really great to hear. We're really keen to link up with people through AMIC and also to capture, document and share the amazing work that happens. So for everyone who is now a massive fan of John Kelly (like me), keep an eye out for his EP later in the year. Best thing to do is follow him on facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JohnKellyMusician/ or on twitter https://twitter.com/JK_Musician

I am a big advocate of kitchen dancing, Lauren, as long as the appropriate PPE is available! ;o)

I am battling with how this system works, it's a bit Twitter-like and that's a tool I never got the hang of, but I love the library idea! I could probably live in it :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

It is a bit _hectic_ isn't it? We're trying our best to make everything clear but when people get really excited the chats get flooded (and I think that's a good sign of engagement!). Let me know if you need any help or guidance to navigate the conference tools :slightly_smiling_face:

any way of digging out the gig?

Due to the low quality of the audio recording (sorry, this is COMPLETELY our fault) we decided not to share the gig portion of it. However ? 2/3 performances were asynchronous, so you can easily re-watch them here https://youtu.be/TNF2twGwjxU ? @johnkelly has a lot of performances online, I'm sure he would be more than happy to share them with you and the rest of the NIME community!
